Jane Obshatkin, Vice Principal

Richard Brain, Guidance

Jane Obshatkin has worked in public education for over;-]
35 years. Her last 14 years in administraton was spent 2
at Methuen High School. Jane began her career as a
Special Education teacher in Natick, MA and has worked ;
diligently in her role as vice principal in Methuen. Her
many accomplishments include pioneering the Alpha
Alternative Education Program, developing the Northern
Essex Community College Math Program, and recently, pi
becoming the Supervisor of Career and Technical
Education. She has always supported the GCP, PAVE, ~
and SPIN programs. She is best known for patrolling the
major halls and seeing to it that all students get to class.: :
Her clicking heels will be sadly missed by staff and
students alike.

Richard Brain has been a member of the Methuen
Guidance Department for many years. First starting out
as a vocational counselor, and then moving on to a
traditional guidance counselor role, Richard was a fixture
in the guidance office. In his time as a guidance
counselor, Richard taught several sections of the
Colleges and Careers class. There he helped hundreds
of seniors reach their goal of attending college after high,
school. Richard is best known for his wonderful sense of
humor, unmistakable smile, and his good nature.

Sally Frongillo has worked for Methuen Public Schools for
over 25 years. She has worked both at the primary and
secondary levels. Sally spent the last 10 years of her
career at Methuen High School. Most of her time was
spent in the the Guidance Department as the assistant
who administered the DISCOVER College and Career
Assessment. While doing this, Sally developed countless
relationships with staff and students. She is best known
for her cheery disposition, her willingness to help all, and
her kind spirit.

Sally Frongillo, Program Assistant

Dedications

Anita DiCroce, Office Secretary

Fran Molesso, Physical Education

Anita DiCroce is retiring after 21 years with the
Methuen School Department. She has been the
secretary at the Central School, Oakland School,
Special Education Department, and one of the
secretaries at the High School.
She will miss working with the students and the many
friends she has made throughout the system. She
especially enjoyed the staff at the High School and will
miss all of them. She looks forward to doing a little
traveling, camping, and spending more time with her
family. Anita is one of our quiet, strong supporters,
and we will miss her. Thank you, Anita, for always
being there for the yearbook staff!

Mr. Peter Salemi started teaching Health and Biology at
Methuen High School back in 1972 at the old Tenney
High School. Now he is best known for teaching
Chemistry and being the Teacher of the Year. Originally,
Mr. Salemi wanted to be a barber, but he ended up
tutoring in college and fell in love with teaching and
helping people. One thing he loves about this job is it is
never the same. "There are always new students, new
people and new problems to be solved." For thirty eight
years, students at Methuen High School have been
blessed with his sincerity and academic dedication. He
will be greatly missed. In retirement, Mr. Salemi is
looking forward to spending more time with his family,
traveling, and learning to play the piano.

Fran Molesso, commonly known as Mr. Mo worked
for Methuen Public Schools for 35 years - 7 years
at the Tenny, 4 at the CGS and the balance 24
here at MHS. He also coached and taught at MIT
during the nights. He loved working with the
students and was always enthusiastic about
helping the students succeed. Fran has been a
longtime, dedicated member of the high school
faculty. He is also the consummate teacher/coach
who is highly respected by his physical education
students as well as his football, track and
gymnastics athletes. He can always be counted
on to go the extra mile for his students. Both staff
and student body will remember Mr. Mo as the
positive role model.

Remembering Mr. Dionne

Gary Dionne worked for Methuen Public Schools for over fifteen years. He worked both as a
special needs teacher and an adjustment counselor. Over the years, Gary developed countless
relationships with so many students. He was actively involved in self-help programs, an activist
for non-violence programs and assisted in developing conflict resolution and peer mediation
programs. His expertise in these areas allowed him to institute programs not only for Methuen,
but all across the region. In addition, Gary worked countless hours at the Psychological Center
helping people to find their way to a positive and fulfilling life. Gary was an inspiration to those
students who often felt isolated. He is missed by all of those who came to know his special
generosity.

A Tribute to Gary Dionne
Listening is a magnetic and strange thing, a creative force... When we are listened to, it creates
us, makes us unfold and expand. Ideas actually begin to grow within us and come to life...
When we listen to people there is an alternating current, and this recharges us so that we never
get tired of each other...

And it is this little creative fountain inside us that begins to spring and cast up new thoughts and
unexpected laughter and wisdom... Well, it is when people listen to us, with quiet fascinated
attention, that the little fountain begins to work again, to accelerate in the most surprising way.
-Brenda Ueland

Gary had a way that made you feel honored and valued simply by listening. He could challenge
but not judge. He could make you think about your position but not feel threatened that you
might need to change your mind. He taught so many so much simply by listening. Often by the
time you were done talking to Gary, you gained new insight into your situation and your
character and he barley had to say a word. Then there were, of course, times when one needed
to listen to Gary. He had a wisdom and a presence that made one want to listen, even when
you were sure you didn't. Thanks for listening Gary, rest in peace!

At

Dear Seniors,
It has been my privilege to be your assistant principal for the past

four years. I could not have asked for a better group of young

people who worked hard and sacrificed some of their liberties to

bring back school pride and integrity. I will miss you and remember

"Do the difficult right over the easy wrong" If you do this, good

people will respect and love you for your integrity.

Sincerely,

Mr. Downs

Independent Theatre Club

The Multicultural Club "Voices of the Cultures" is
a grassroots movement that was founded by the
Class of 2007, they felt the need to develop a
peer support system and guidance services for
students that are new to the country, come from
a different culture, and/or are new to Methuen

High School. This group encourages and

promotes individual self-awareness and growth

by learning more about their own culture and

heritage. At the same time, students also learn to

embrace other cultures other than their own. The

group strives to improve the student/staff
relationships to create a better understanding of

multicultural awareness; thus creating an

environment that celebrates the diversity that is

represented at Methuen High School. The goal of

this group is to provide students and staff with the

means and support to share information, build a

more collaborative effort and initiative, creating

and achieving a more positive culture and spirit at

Methuen High School.

Faculty Advisor: Claudia Vanegas

The Independent Theatre Club was

started in the fall of 2007 by a small group

of dedicated thespians who wanted

another outlet for their creative talents.

We meet every Friday and every other

Monday after school from 2:00 - 4:00. As

the title suggests, the students really steer

the club: they choose a play, hold

auditions for roles, direct themselves, do

the make-up, gather or make their own

costumes, sets and props (with a little

help from some talented parents), and

design the program. Last year we entered

a statewide High School Drama festival

and spent a whole Saturday performing

our one-act play, watching other high

schools do their plays, and making new

friends from all over Massachusetts. We

do not do musicals, elaborate productions

or well-known plays.

Senior Class Play

Methuen High School's Peer leadership program

is designed for students who wish to be proactive

in making positive changes in themselves, their

community, their educational enviomment, and in

others. Peer Leaders accomplish this by using

positive peer influence to promote social

responsibility in youth with opportunities to

provide community service and model pro-social

behavior. The peer leader Program also serves

to strengthen the self-esteem of the student by

providing them with leadership experience and

an opportunity to play a meaningful role in the

lives of others. Some of the activities that the

Peer Leaders are involved in include (but are not

limited to) : 1 . Food collection and Donation to

the Lazarus House 2. Promotion of alternative

Drug-Free school and community activities 3.

Senior Citizen Olympics 4. Developing a

Recycling program "MHS - GO GREEN" 5.

Student Acitivity Open House

Although all students are welcome to participate

in the program, it is expected that they adhere to

the guidelines of the student handbook and are

willing to follow the ideals of a drug-free,

violence-free school and present themselves as

for greatness. We are the ones called upon to
bring this magnificent sport to our city.

When we are standing on that field, we are
not the new kids on the block. On that very field

we are not seniors. We are not juniors,
sophmores, or freshmen. We are not students or
teachers. We are not Whites, Blacks, Hispanics,
or Asians. We are Frisbee players. Not only are

we Frisbee players, we are friends. We are

brothers, sisters, and cousins. We are family. We

are the few, the proud, and by the end of our

game, you will remember the name Ultimate

Frisbee.

Open to all students who can contribute to the
discussion and bring in photos to talk about. You
do not have to own a camera but you should
have means to take your own photos that you
can bring to the club for discussion. Students do
not have access to school cameras. They do
have access to a computer to show digital photos
on a disk and if they elect to show their photos
this way, they should be able to use a computer
to bring up their work. This club does not use the
darkroom and you do not need to have taken a
photography class.

This is a low key, student run club, teacher
monitored. The purpose of this club is to learn
how to take better photos, enjoy a friendly social
interaction with students that like to take photos,
and have a common interest.

Christine, the day you were born we had
great hopes and dreams for you. You
have provided us with such great joy
over the years. The innocent baby we
brought home has grown into a beautiful,
intelligent, and successful young woman.

As we look back on your growth as a
young athlete playing softball for the
Braves or as a cheerleader for
Champion Cheer, you never ceased to
amaze us. You carried this determination
into your school work and your
development into a wonderful young

We are very proud of your
